Rampage at Apple store!

Today has been Apple day in the Castelo-Phifer household. No, I didn't get an iPad (waiting to see what else shows up in the market this year that will address my ebook reading needs---preferably using some variation of the e-ink screen).

I have a 4 y.o. MacBook that was having disk problems and had been sitting around as a shiny white paper-weight for about 6 months, that I finally got around taking for service at the nearest Apple store. It got a new hard disk, courtesy of the Apple extended care service. So it feels like we got a new laptop.

I also needed a replacement for my trusty linux workstation, which after six years or so of service has been out of commission for a few weeks due to a faulty water cooling pump. I'll eventually get around replacing its cooling system (with a simpler fan-based setup) and, while I'm at it, getting a multi-core processor (it still has a single core AMD 64 in it), but this just felt like the right time to get a new desktop.

So we also got a 27" iMac. Spent a few hours today transferring files and whatnot (turns out I have gigabytes of whatnot). I also got an upgrade to Aperture 3, and a snow leopard upgrade for Ellen's iMac. Ellen also got a "magic mouse" and a bluetooth keyboard (both are miles above the stuff that came with her iMac originally, which were really just awful).

All in all, quite a sad day for our finances...
